A new and sustainable approach to invasive species

It may at first seem that we take a radical approach to dealing with an invasive species. However, our motivation is deeply rooted in popular ecological and agricultural philosophies.

To be clear, we do not advocate introducing or spreading any invasive species. We see eating invasive species, or “invasivory,” as a way to tap two powerful human forces: the hunger for food, and the hunger for knowledge. 

Directing these forces at the issues of invasive species like the autumn olive will bring us closer to understanding and addressing the root causes and discovering practical solutions. 

From our humble beginnings on a small organic farm in Central Illinois, the foundation of our philosophy has always been to create a sustainable agricultural system that will over the long term:

  • Satisfy human food and fiber needs.
  • Enhance environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the agriculture economy depends.
  • Make the most efficient use of nonrenewable resources and on-farm resources and integrate, where appropriate, natural biological cycles and controls.
  • Sustain the economic viability of farm operations.
  • Enhance the quality of life for farmers and society as a whole.

Beyond that, we follow the principles and approaches of permaculture design which promote working with rather than against nature.

And perhaps most exciting, we fit within a larger “invasivore” movement which has been described as “an eco-culinary frisson” in the New York Times article A Diet for an Invaded Planet: Invasive Species.
